Pilates is a movement-based exercise method that focuses on improving strength, flexibility, posture, balance, coordination and body awareness. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, it is designed to enhance the connection between the mind and body through controlled, precise movements and conscious breathing.
Pilates aims to develop core strength and stability, mobilising and supporting the spine and promoting efficient movement patterns throughout the body. Exercises may be performed on a mat or using specialised equipment and can be adapted to suit people of varying ages, fitness levels and physical abilities.
Pilates practitioners use a structured approach to movement education, helping individuals improve posture, mobility, balance and functional strength. It is commonly used to support physical wellbeing, assist with injury prevention and rehabilitation and enhance overall movement quality.
Through regular practice, Pilates may help improve muscular strength and endurance, increase flexibility, promote body awareness and support better movement and physical function in everyday life.
