- SMS Sender ID Changes Take Effect from 1 July 2026
Members are encouraged to review their SMS messaging arrangements ahead of new anti-scam measures that take effect on 1 July 2026.
The changes relate to organisations that send SMS messages using a branded sender ID, where the sender appears as a business or organisation name rather than a phone number.
Under the new arrangements, organisations using branded sender IDs will need to register them through the SMS Sender ID Register. Messages sent using an unregistered sender ID may display as “Unverified” instead of showing the organisation’s name.
These changes are designed to help reduce SMS scams and improve trust in legitimate communications.
Who may be affected?
The requirements may apply to a wide range of organisations, including:
- Small businesses
- Community and sporting organisations
- Charities and not-for-profit groups
- Schools and childcare providers
- Health and medical practices
- Professional service providers
- Any organisation sending appointment reminders, notifications, marketing messages or other SMS communications using a branded sender name
What should members do?
Members who use SMS messaging services should:
- Check whether they send SMS messages using a branded sender ID.
- Contact their telecommunications or SMS service provider.
- Confirm whether registration is required.
- Complete any necessary registration before 1 July 2026.
For members receiving messages from ATMS:
- SMS communications (like insurance reminders, AHPRA reminders, provider audits, and renewals) will only be sent to people who have opted in
- An opt-in/opt-out system is already available in your member portal

Failure to register may affect how recipients view and trust SMS communications from your organisation.
