Research Grants

ATMS invites applications for a grant of up to $10,000 for natural medicine research that supports the goals of the ATMS Strategic Plan.

Eligibility Overview

  • Applicants may submit one proposal per application cycle.
  • An applicant may not hold more than one current ATMS-funded grant as Lead Investigator at any time (unless expressly permitted).
  • The Lead Investigator must be a current financial, accredited ATMS member for the full term of the grant and cannot be an A&RC or Board member. Non-members may participate as co-investigators or collaborators.
  • be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident;
  • currently reside in Australia.

Proposals must be for a clearly identifiable 12-month project, even if part of a larger research initiative. Funding is not intended to provide long-term support for projects or top-up funding for ongoing studies.

If your project involves practice-based research your Public Indemnity Insurance must specifically cover this.

2025

The ATMS Research Grant allocates up to AU$20,000 to support natural medicine research that aligns the goals of the ATMS Strategic Plan.

At the Gala Dinner on Saturday, it was announced that in 2025 there would be two recipients, each receiving $10,000:

  • Dr Yu-Ting Sun, from Western Sydney University,
    whose research is: Traditional Medicinal Plants for Vascular Health: Preclinical Evaluation of Anti-Calcification Effects
  • Adam Haysom-McDowell, from University of Technology Sydney
    whose research is:  Investigating the Therapeutic Efficacy of Lemon Myrtle against Chronic Lung Diseases
2024

The ATMS Research Grant allocates up to AU$20,000 to support natural medicine research that aligns the goals of the ATMS Strategic Plan.

At the AGM on Sunday, it was announced that in 2024 there would be two recipients, each receiving $10,000:

  • Dr Deep Jyoti Bhuyan – NICM Health Research Institute at Western Sydney University For his research: Can probiotic gut bacteria enhance the bioavailability and bioactivity of Kakadu plum antioxidants?
  • Dr Isabella Leung – Western Sydney University For her research: Transforming the acupuncture practice scope to encompass the paramedical context: a scoping review with implications for extending practices for natural medicine professions. Congratulations to both grant recipients.
2023

2022

ATMS invited applications for a $10,000 ATMS Research Grant and shortlisted five research projects. A rigorous and independent de-identified assessment process was undertaken of each application and ATMS is pleased to announce that 2 ATMS Research Grants have been awarded to the following teams:

• Kate Levett, Kerry Sutcliffe and Carolyn Ee for their study: Complementary therapies to support childbirth – women’s and care providers’ experiences. A qualitative analysis of individual and institutional barriers and enablers to use.

• Soo Liang Ooi, Sokcheon Pak and Ron Campbell for their study: The potential benefits of ginger supplementation in individuals with mild-to moderate iron deficiency – A single-arm pilot study. ATMS congratulates the successful project teams, and we look forward to sharing this research once complete.
