- The Truth About Detoxing

If we lived on a mountaintop, breathing fresh, unpolluted air, drinking clean spring water, and eating organic food grown in pristine soil, detoxing wouldn’t be necessary. Our bodies would function as nature intended, effortlessly eliminating waste and maintaining balance.
But that is not the world we live in.
Modern life exposes us to an overwhelming number of toxins. Pesticides, heavy metals, pollution, artificial ingredients, and synthetic chemicals have become part of our daily reality. Our homes contain chemicals from cleaning products, personal care items, carpets, and furniture. The food we eat is often sprayed with pesticides, processed with additives, and packaged in materials that can leach harmful substances. Even chronic stress, lack of sleep, and exposure to blue light from screens can increase oxidative stress in the body.
With this constant exposure, our natural detoxification pathways can become sluggish, leading to fatigue, brain fog, inflammation, premature ageing, and a higher risk of disease. This is why regular detoxing and cleansing is essential for maintaining long-term health, preventing disease, and slowing the ageing process.
What is Oxidative Stress and Why Does it Matter?
Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between free radicals (unstable molecules that damage cells) and antioxidants (which neutralise them). Over time, excessive oxidative stress contributes to chronic inflammation, premature ageing, and a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative conditions, and even cancer.
Environmental toxins, processed foods, pollution, and stress all contribute to oxidative stress, making it more important than ever to adopt daily habits that reduce the toxic burden on the body. Detoxification plays a key role in combating oxidative stress by helping the body eliminate accumulated toxins and supporting cellular repair.
My scientific equipment that tests for Oxidative Stress, has shown that most people, especially women, are in oxidative stress and are at a seriously high level. The younger a person is, the less likely they are to be in oxidative stress. Toxins are stored in fat cells so that may be why women are more vulnerable. We don’t want to be increasing our risk of disease or increasing the aging process so it is important to always be cleansing and supporting detox pathways.
Why Detoxing is Necessary in Today’s World
The body has built-in detoxification pathways—primarily through the liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, and digestive system. However, the sheer volume of toxins we are exposed to daily can overwhelm these systems, slowing down the body’s ability to eliminate waste efficiently.
Supporting detoxification is not about following a fad diet or taking drastic measures; it’s about working with the body to enhance its natural ability to cleanse, regenerate, and function optimally.
A well-structured detox program can help:
- Reduce the toxic load on the liver and digestive system
- Support the body in eliminating harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and excess hormones
- Boost energy levels, improve mental clarity, and support skin health
- Enhance immune function and reduce inflammation
- Promote weight balance and improve digestion
Daily Cleansing and Deeper Detoxing: A Balanced Approach
To maintain good health, we need to incorporate daily cleansing habits while also committing to deeper detox protocols a few times a year.
Daily Detoxing and Cleansing
The foundation of a healthy body starts with daily habits that support detoxification. Some of the best ways to promote cleansing include:
- Hydration: Drinking 1.5–2L of filtered water daily to flush toxins from the kidneys and support lymphatic drainage.
- Nutrient-Dense Diet: Eating fresh, organic whole foods rich in antioxidants, fibre, and essential nutrients.
- Liver-Supporting Foods: Including bitter greens, cruciferous vegetables, lemon, beetroot, and herbs like coriander and dandelion.
- Movement and Sweating: Regular exercise, yoga, and sauna therapy to stimulate circulation and eliminate toxins through sweat.
- Breathwork and Fresh Air: Deep breathing practices to help the lungs eliminate toxins.
- Reducing Chemical Exposure: Choosing natural household and skincare products to lower the body’s toxic burden.
These daily practices keep the detox pathways open and functioning efficiently, reducing the accumulation of harmful substances over time.
Deep Detoxing: Seasonal Cleanses and Guided Programs
In addition to daily detoxing, deeper cleansing is recommended twice a year to give the body a reset and allow for more intensive healing. These deeper cleanses are designed to remove built-up toxins, reduce inflammation, and restore balance.
Some effective detox programs include:
- 3-Day Juice Cleanse: A short, nutrient-dense reset that floods the body with vitamins and antioxidants while giving the digestive system a break.
- 7-Day Whole Food Cleanse: Focuses on organic, plant-based meals that support liver and gut health.
- 21-Day Detox Program: A structured approach that removes inflammatory foods, incorporates cleansing practices, and provides liver-supporting herbs and supplements.
Each of these cleanses works at different levels, depending on the individual’s needs. The key is to choose a program that is supportive rather than extreme, allowing the body to detoxify without unnecessary stress.

Why You Should Detox Under the Guidance of a Qualified Naturopath or Nutritionist
Detoxing is not a one-size-fits-all process. Everyone has different needs based on their health history, toxin exposure, lifestyle, and genetics.
While short-term cleanses can be beneficial, deeper detox programs should be done under the guidance of a qualified Naturopath or Nutritionist who can:
- Assess your individual toxic load and tailor a program to your needs.
- Recommend the right foods, supplements, and herbal support to optimise detox pathways.
- Ensure your detox is safe, balanced, and effective without depleting nutrients.
- Address any underlying health issues that may be affecting detoxification.
- Provide ongoing support and guidance to help you integrate long-term detox-friendly habits.
Choosing a qualified health practitioner ensures that detoxing is done in a way that enhances your well-being, rather than causing stress or imbalance.
