Q&A

What is your role at your organisation and how do you support practitioners /or the industry?

I’m the Director of Education, which means I’m lucky enough to give presentations to our gorgeous practitioner community at conferences and industry events. Education is one of the core foundations of our philosophy at Activated Probiotics: we want education to be the thread that runs through everything we do. We love talking about probiotic science and research in new and up-to-date ways and nothing makes me happier than knowing our team of practitioner education consultants are out there taking this knowledge to practitioners across the country.

How did you get into your area of expertise, and why do you stay?

Before Activated Probiotics I was a lecturer at Endeavour College. I’ve spent the last twenty years lecturing to students of naturopathy and nutrition in the UK, US, and Australia. Education is my calling! My current role is the most fulfilling I’ve ever had as, not only do I have the pleasure of presenting and sharing knowledge, but I am also involved in research and product development. There is so much happening in the world of microbiome research at the moment so there’s no chance of ever being bored.

What has been the main focus or outcomes of your brands’ work over the past year?

Our focus is always on bringing evidence-based, clinically trialled probiotic formulations to practitioners to help them solve problems. Last year we released some really exciting products, all with groundbreaking research behind them. The latest release, Biome Cholesterol, has fantastic clinical research to support healthy cholesterol levels which is a such an important area that can benefit from condition-specific probiotic solutions. This exciting development highlights our commitment to advancing health and wellness through innovative science.

How has your field changed in the past 5 years? What new areas are emerging?

So much change! The world of probiotic understanding has shifted dramatically in the last few years. Thanks to the enormous focus in clinical research, we are constantly expanding and building on our knowledge of how probiotics work their magic. What’s super exciting to see in the research at the moment is the exploration of how the oral microbiome influences body physiology like the cardiovascular system, metabolic health, fertility, and cognition. Mindblowing!

What do you predict will happen in the next 5 to 10 years in your brand’s particular field(s) of expertise?

I think we’ll see even more clinically-trialled formulations for condition-specific outcomes as researchers really hone in on the specific modulatory actions of known and new strains. I also think there’ll be more research on the synbiotic activities of probiotic bacteria and specific prebiotic fibres.

What is the one-way you believe natural medicine practitioners, can make a difference for their clients?

I think there’s more than one way! But, for me, it’s always about education. Sharing knowledge with patients allows practitioners to have a ripple effect: their patients take the information they’ve learnt from their practitioner and share it with their families, friends, and further afield. Knowledge is power!

Fun fact for the readers: Tell us who inspires you/or who your professional idol is and why?

I really admire and respect Professor Jayashri Kulkarni, a pioneer doctor, researcher, and academic who has done so much to change the way the medical world views women’s hormones.
