Q&A

What is your role at your organisation and how do you support practitioners /or the industry?

My roled with our organization is that I am the founder of this brand, however first and foremost being a practitioner treating many who come to our clinic Subtle Energies, which is over 30 years old, where my Daughter Khursheed Irani also practices. I am also an instructor, a teacher of different modalities for many years, an international speaker at various conferences globally for Ayurveda, Aromatic Medicine, Bowen therapy, Reflexology and also have spoken at events such as the soul festival in 2023 where there were visionaries and luminaries on various panels.

We also have a nationally recognised Diploma of Ayurveda and Ayurveda Aromatherapy.

I follow what my Ayurveda Professor Dr P H kulkarni always said: I was a student; I am a student and will always be a student.

How did you get into your area of expertise, and why do you stay?

I used to be an accountant many moons ago, but natural therapies always fascinated me as my father inculcated it into me. He was professionally into sales and marketing, but he was a great believer of natural therapies and a healthy lifestyle. He had studied massage and Hypnotherapy and studied these modalities as a hobby, being into body building as well for himself. During covid whilst decluttering his apartment in Mumbai I came across precious notes he had handwritten as his studies into different forms of massages. I firmly believe his spirit has inspired me to do the work he was unable to pursue as a profession. I started learning natural therapies when I migrated to Australia in the late eighties and have never looked back. I stay in this field because I know we compliment conventional medicine and have been able to help many who have come to our clinic run over 30 years by my daughter Khursheed and myself with many acute and chronic conditions.

What has been the main focus or outcomes of your brands’ work over the past year?

The main focus of our brand’s work is to assist people not just through skin care but knowing how therapeutic the essential oils as actives are together with EFA rich base vegetable oils. We know we are helping many to overcome their fears their anxiety high cortisol levels, stress, hormonal imbalance adrenal overflow leading to lack of sleep and manifesting into disease. Using the products we have created with intent, made to empower we have channelled into many changing their lifestyles seeing and feeling the benefits of what we have to offer.

My entry into the spa industry was in 2003 through the Taj Jiva spas thanks to the book I had written called The Magic of Ayurveda Aromatherapy back then which was selling at their bookshop. Post that my son Nick started getting involved and creating a holistic skin science range and wellness range which helped in spreading our work globally through high end spas such as the Six senses, Peninsula hotels, some of the Mandarin Orientals, the Crowns in Australia, Gwinganna and many others.

The past year has been very challenging, but it has taught us to hold on to what we believe in and persevere.

How has your field changed in the past 5 years? What new areas are emerging?

The past five years with covid and post covid have been challenging but people are looking for ways to improve their lifestyles. They are seeking as to how to enhance their immunity, as post covid there are emerging cases of auto immune disorders, cancers, new infections.

Also due to uncertainty post covid there is an epidemic of insomnia and sleep disorders and the essential oils and vegetable EFA rich oils as actives in our products together with body works such as massage, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, with these oil blends and using products as homework helps on a physical mental emotional level. Bowen therapy is a wonderful soft tissue modality and once again these blends are given as homework, as more people are leaning towards wanting a healthy lifestyle.

In the past five years we have done many consultations on the phone or online as well globally, giving people insights into how they can enhance their immunity and be able to cope with life’s challenges following as per Ayurveda a Din Acharya, a daily routine. This can involve meditation, yoga, exercise, self- massage, regular application of oils, going for regular treatments, having a clean diet which is not highly acidic and also helping them by getting into a a parasympathetic mode of rest relax repair as they get ready for a good night’s sleep which is very essential to rejuvenate and revitalise on all levels.

Also we recommend people going for a regular detoxification (Panchakarma)to authentic Ayurveda retreats in India. Formally not many believed in this, but now more and more people do follow all the advice we have given over the years as they can see the difference it makes in their lives

I see that happening slowly and steadily.

What do you predict will happen in the next 5 to 10 years in your brand’s particular field(s) of expertise?

There will be more people getting excited and forming their own wellness businesses which has become a buzz word which is a good thing but the authenticity and integrity of our work together with our knowledge that we keep receiving and imparting to others will see us only growing and expanding. The key is to always have trust in what you do and when you create with intent and empower lives you get so inspired that you can never fail and keep evolving on all levels.

What is the one-way you believe natural medicine practitioners, can make a difference for their clients?

As I have said earlier, we compliment conventional medicine and as per Ayurveda principles we can direct people to in a very simple manner keep themselves in balance with simple techniques through a dinacharya, a daily routine following the principles of ayurveda.

The aim of ayurveda is to preserve good health to maintain it and to prevent disease thereby keeping your elements in balance.

Fun fact for the readers: Tell us who inspires you/or who your professional idol is and why?

My professional idols are my teachers.

My spiritual Guru Paramahansa Yogananda who has taught us to program ourselves through affirmations. This way we can deprogram what the politicians the pharmaceuticals even families program each other which instils fear and inhibitions limiting us in using our full potential.

Just affirming to yourself whilst working eating meditating ‘I am healthy I am happy I am positive’ will be absorbed by the trillions of cells you are made up of as each cell has a memory chip and then meditating even for five minutes doing pranayamas and getting in touch with your divinity your higher self will create a magnetism that empowers you on all levels which reminds me of this powerful affirmation:

There is a power which will light our way to good health, happiness, peace and success if you would but turn towards that light. By Paramahansa Yogananda

My Ayurveda Guru the late Prof Dr P H Kulkarni, a true Dyon of Ayurveda who taught me what no books can teach through sitting with him in his consultations and to march on despite all odds.

My Bowen Gurus Ossie and Elaine Rentsch who being in their nineties and late eighties have travelled the world to many countries spreading their knowledge of Bowen since 1984! How inspirational is that!

And finally, a funny one yet so profound! My dear late mother-in-law Sheila Irani who taught me that you are damned if you do, and you are damned if you don’t so you might as well do what your heart desires and what you know is the right thing to do without hurting anyone. It took off layers of inhibitions and limitations around me. And finally also following our Zoroastrian philosophy of truthfulness, righteousness striving to get there, leading to Ushta endless joy, endless bliss.
