How ATMS’ Transition to Practice seminar helped me and my business By Silvia Rodriguez-Foord
Silvia Rodriguez-Foord, Massage Therapist, The Lavender Clinic
Last year I attended ATMS’ Transition to Practice seminar in February and found it very useful, especially having just started my home-based clinic. This seminar gave me the motivation I needed to start using marketing. I now practice at Elemental Health at St Ives on Mondays as well as seeing clients in my home-based clinic, The Lavender Clinic, throughout the week.
My biggest take-aways from the seminar were around how important social media is for promoting your business. Having previously run a business I was stuck in an old-fashioned marketing mindset. Before attending Transition to Practice I was considering advertising in magazines and newspapers as well as creating brochures. I could have easily spent a lot of money on these things without really generating any new business.
I loved the Transition to Practice seminar format, it allowed us the opportunity to ask lots of questions about starting a business which we may have missed or forgotten. This, for me, was the stand-out. I was able to ask lots of questions related to the day-to-day running of my business and get practical answers.
I have attended several ATMS workshops and have found them all useful, but I loved Transition to Practice because it gave us time to network with other attendees. It was extremely valuable to speak with experienced therapists about how they built their practices and the importance of continuing to market your business even when you have an established client base. I was surprised to learn how many practitioners found local networking groups useful for marketing and growing their business.
Another piece of advice I took away from the seminar was learning to consolidate the times I work from home. The presenters advised the more time you have available the more spread out your appointments tend to be, so I am working toward implementing this in my home clinic. I now split my time working between Elemental Health one day per week and in my own home-based clinic, seeing between 6-10 clients a week.
