We recently sat down with Sandy Sanderson, CEO and founder of Elektra Magnesium® to ask her about her business, her experiences and where she sees the industry heading.

How do you support practitioners / or the industry?

We supply topical magnesium products to a large wholesale customer group of over 300 clinics and stores, including naturopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, acupuncturists, massage therapists, medical clinics and pharmacies.

How did you get into your field of expertise and why do you stay?

I got rid of my own heart arrhythmias and symptoms of Hashimotos Hypothyroidism (ie. symptoms of Mg deficiency) by using transdermal magnesium by bathing and soaking with magnesium chloride. It also helped me breeze through menopause. It was so successful that we began building a range of convenient magnesium skin and body care products in 2009 under the brand of Elektra Magnesium® and now have the largest range of magnesium topical products in the world – all made with natural (chemical-free) ingredients.

What has been your main focus or achievement over the past year?

Earlier this year we launched our newest product: Baby Calm Balm, which has a very light 5% concentration of magnesium chloride salts, infused with skin nurturing plant ingredients including calendula, chamomile, rosehip, rose geranium and more. This can be used for baby skin care, relaxation massage and also to prevent nappy rash.

Why are your products important?

We continue to develop special magnesium personal care products with natural (chemical-free) ingredients so people have the opportunity to get transdermal absorption of magnesium simply by using their body and skin care products daily. Magnesium deficiency is more common, due to soils and foods having less, and stress can cause excessive loss of magnesium. Low magnesium can also cause hypersensitivity to stress, weakens the immune system, and causes premature ageing and disease.

What do you predict will happen in the next 5 to 10 years in your particular field?

Magnesium absorption via skin is a revolutionary and novel way to supplement diet and compensates when digestion and gut absorption are compromised. It’s also a faster way to absorb magnesium and feel the effects in the muscles by relieving cramps and loosening stiff joints after massaging in Magnesium Cream or Charge Lotion. In the next 5 to 10 years transdermal magnesium supplementation will become more and more mainstream as digestive issues and stress loads continue to increase.

What is the one-way you believe natural medicine practitioners, can make a difference for their clients?

How much should people use? Well, there is no one-size-fits-all approach, so we have a chart on our website FAQ page which indicates how much magnesium is delivered by each category of products. Topical magnesium products are safe to use in large amounts and people can experiment with different combinations to suit their skin type, lifestyle and needs.

Fun Fact for the Readers: Tell us who inspires you / or who your professional idol is and why?

I have several people who have inspired my personal and professional life. Magnesium is my passion and has a strong affinity with water. Interestingly part of magnesium’s role at the cellular level is to help bring water in (as structured water) to promote optimal cell hydration.

My four idols are:

Dr Mildred Seelig – A research scientist who conducted many studies into the nutritional benefits of magnesium, and wrote the book ‘The Magnesium Factor,’ which explains why chronic magnesium deficiency leads to diabetes type 2 and heart disease.

Dr Mark Sircus, who wrote the book ‘Transdermal Magnesium Therapy.’

Dr Carolyn Dean, who wrote the book ‘The Magnesium Miracle.’

Professor Gerald Pollack, who wrote the book ‘The Fourth Phase of Water,’ which explains the importance and power of water and hydration.
