The Journal of the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society (ISSN 1326-3390) publishes articles on the activities of the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society, as well as on all aspects of natural medicine as taught and practised in Australia.
An article must be on a theme that is generally accepted to relate to natural medicine as recognised by the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society, and is relevant to Australian natural medicine clinical practice.
Acceptance of an article will be based on the assessment made by the Peer Review Committee. Author/s with a commercial interest in a therapeutic good, device or service mentioned in the article must declare their interest. This interest may be published in the Journal for the information of readers.
Submission of an article implies that it has not been previously published, and is not in the process of being submitted elsewhere for publication.
Articles must be written to a standard that is regarded as appropriate for a professional journal. Submissions should be written in clear and scholarly English. Submissions with poor grammar or misspellings will not be accepted. Information presented in the article must be substantiated from generally accepted reputable sources of information. Unreferenced or poorly referenced articles will not be accepted.
All articles are subject to peer review and the editing process. Alterations to an accepted article will be made in accordance with the Journal’s in-house style. Every effort is made for the author or authors to see the final copy, but time restraints may prevent this from happening.
ATMS supports the NHMRC guidelines for the use of animals in research as follows: NHMRC acknowledges that the use of animals in research raises important ethical questions and seeks to ensure that all animals used in research that it funds are used ethically and humanely. Animals include any live non-human vertebrate.
Word Count
We accept articles of up to 2500 words. If your article exceeds this length, please contact the Editor before submitting it.
Figures and tables
Figures and tables should NOT be included in your main text file. Each figure should be submitted as an individual file. Figures should be numbered in the order cited in the text. Figures will be reduced, so please do not submit large figures/graphs that contain small type because the text within the figure will not be readable after reduction.
Please follow these guidelines for submitting figures:
- Do NOT embed art files into a Word or PDF document.
- Images and illustrations should be submitted at a minimum of 300 dpi when scaled at 100%.
- Save art files in one of the following formats: PDF, EPS, TIFF or JPG
- Do NOT submit PowerPoint, Bitmap or Excel files.
Please name your figure and table files with the first author’s name (i.e., SmithFig1.tif SmithTable2.doc).
Permissions
Materials taken from other sources must be accompanied by a written statement from both author and publisher giving permission to the Journal for reproduction. Obtain and submit written permission from authors to cite unpublished data or papers still in press.
Referencing
The Journal has adopted the Vancouver System of Referencing. References are numbered in the order they appear in the article.

Presentation of Typescripts
Articles must include:
- Title
- Author’s name and awards (e.g. ND, BSc) and/or affiliations (e.g. Lecturer, Anatomy Department, School of Medical Sciences, North West University)
- Abstract of the article (up to 250 words)
- Body of text
- If bullet points are used they should be in the following form:
- Acronyms: Write words in full the first time they occur in the text followed by the acronym in parentheses. Thereafter use the acronym only.
- If bullet points are used they should be in the following form:
- Single quotation marks are used to enclose a direct quotation. Use double quotation marks for a quotation within a quotation.
- Tables: Send each table on a separate page. Number tables consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text and supply a brief title for each. Do not use internal horizontal or vertical lines. Be sure that each table is cited in the text. If you use data from another published or unpublished source, obtain permission and fully acknowledge that source.
- Figures: Figures should be either professionally drawn and photographed, or submitted as photographic-quality digital prints and in a JPEG or GIF format that will produce high-quality images in the Web version of the Journal. Figures should be numbered consecutively according to the order in which they have been cited in the text. If a figure has been published previously, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the figure. Permission is required irrespective of authorship or publisher except for documents in the public domain.

Please save the file in Word format. Submissions must be sent by email to the Editor at jatms@bigpond.com. Please send graphics as separate files, and indicate the location/s in the article for their insertion. Copyright requirements are the responsibility of authors.

When published, full copyright of the article is with the Journal of the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society, which is a publication of the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society (ABN 046 002 844 233). The article may be additionally published on the ATMS website, or in any of the bibliographic index databases that index the Journal (e.g. AltHealthwatch, CINAHL, or in any other media that the Journal participates in). Submission of an article implies full agreement by the author or authors that the article is the property of the Journal of the Australian Traditional-Medicine Society. An author who does not agree with this copyright provision should not submit an article.
No payment is made for accepted articles. If any revenue or royalties are received from the publication of an article, it is understood by the authors that all revenue will remain with the Australian Traditional Medicine Society and none will be distributed to the authors.
