STRUCTURE OF THE ATMS

ATMS is governed by an Executive Board of Directors in accordance with the ATMS Memorandum and Articles of Association. The Executive Board has established several Committees and appoints the members of those Committees. Committee members provide close scrutiny of various governance and administrative matters, and all Committees are subject to and report back to the Executive Board.

The Executive Board is assisted in its role by a salaried Chief Administrative Officer and full and part-paid employees. Additional specialist assistance is provided by ATMS Honorary Office Holders who head natural medicine modality specialist departments, or represent the interests of ATMS and members in every State and the Australian Capital Territory. The interests of ATMS members are further represented by a Member’s representative.

ATMS DIRECTORS

All Director positions are Honorary positions. At October 2010 there were 15 Directors of the ATMS:

Dr Sandi Rogers
ATMS President and Chairperson of the ATMS Executive Board.

Along with a Diploma of Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine and Massage, Sandi holds a Doctorate of Education and a Master of Education. A long serving College Principal, Sandi has 25 years experience as a teacher and lecturer in natural medicine subjects including Sciences, Business Studies, Herbal Medicine, Nutrition, Massage and Reflexognosy. She is also regularly invited to present talks, both nationally and internationally. Sandi has been a Board member since 1990 and was re-elected President of ATMS in September 2009. Sandi chairs the Executive Management Committee, Complaints Appeal Tribunal and Public Relations Committee, and also sits on the Research Committee and Policy Committee.

Bill Pearson
ATMS Vice-President.

Qualified in Acupuncture and Remedial Massage, Bill is a past College Principal with many years as practitioner and lecturer. He has been a Board member since 1996. Bill chairs the Marketing Committee and also sits on the Executive Management Committee, Complaints Appeal Tribunal, Policy Committee, Professional Education Seminars Committee and Public Relations Committee. A former President, Bill is also currently the Tasmanian State Representative and the Executive Board Member responsible for the management of the ATMS State and Territory Representatives.

Teresa Mitchell-Paterson
ATMS Vice-President.

Teresa was elected to the Board of ATMS in 2009 and brings with her a sound education in Natural Therapies spanning over 25 years. Teresa holds an Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy, Bachelor of Health Science (Complementary Medicine) and a Master of Health Science (Human Nutrition). Other than practising part-time as a Naturopathic Consultant, Teresa is the National Academic Director of a large private natural health college. Teresa currently sits on the Academic Review Committee and the Professional Education Seminars Committee.

Allan Hudson
ATMS Treasurer.

Allan holds an Advanced Diploma in Naturopathy, Advanced Diploma of Acupuncture, Diploma of Remedial Massage, Diploma of Sports Therapy (USA) and a Certificate in Manual Lymph Drainage & Complex Decongestive Therapy (Germany). He has over 37 years experience as a practitioner, lecturer, and student clinic supervisor, and currently is Faculty Head of Tactile Therapies and the School of Continuing Education at Nature Care College Sydney. Allan has also been the ATMS Department Head of Massage since 1998. Allan was appointed to the Board in 2008, and currently chairs the Professional Education Seminars Committee, and sits on the Executive Management Committee and Academic Review Committee.

Peter Berryman
Qualified in Naturopathy, Homoeopathy and as a Natural Scientist, Peter has 25 years in private practice. He has lectured in Homeopathy since 1990, and been an ATMS Board member since 2007. Peter is the ATMS Department Head of Homoeopathy and sits on the Academic Review Committee.

Leon Cowen
Leon has 36 years experience as a Clinical Hypnotherapist. With many years experience as a lecturer, he is also a College Principal. Leon sits on the Marketing Committee and has been a Board member since 2008.

Stephen Eddey
Stephen holds an Associate Diploma of Chemistry, a Diploma in Naturopathy, a Bachelor of Health Science from Charles Sturt University and a Masters in Health Science from Southern Cross University. Currently a College Principal, Stephen also has 5 years experience in natural medicine research and development. Stephen additionally lectures on nutritional medicine topics nationally and internationally. An ATMS Board member since 2005, Stephen is also Head of the ATMS Department of Naturopathic Nutrition as well as currently sitting on the ATMS Professional Education Committee and the Academic Review Committee.

Peter Farnsworth
Peter holds Diplomas in Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine, Remedial Massage and Reflexology. One of the Veterans of the massage industry, Peter has taught massage and Reflexology for over 30 years in Adelaide. A Board member since 1988, Peter sits on the Academic Review Committee and the Marketing Committee.

Dr Sandra Grace
Sandra holds a Doctorate of Philosophy and Master of Science in Chiropractic (Research). Along with a Diploma of Education, Sandra also holds qualifications in Sports Chiropractic, Clinical Chiropractic Paediatrics, Herbal medicine, Acupuncture and Osteopathy. Sandra has 31 years experience as a teacher and lecturer in bodywork therapies. Sandra currently chairs the Research Committee and also sits on the Complaints Committee and the Academic Review Committee. Sandra has been a Board member since 1990.

Tibor Horvath
Qualified in Acupuncture, Massage and Iridology, Tibby has over 24 years experience in natural medicine practice. Tibby has been a Board member since 1988, and was a former long-serving ATMS Treasurer.

Teresa Mitchell-Paterson
Teresa was elected to the Board of ATMS in 2009 and brings with her a sound education in Natural Therapies spanning over 25 years. Kevin Montgomery
Qualified in Naturopathy, Remedial Massage and Homoeopathy, Kevin has over 21 years in private practice in natural medicine. A current college principal and teacher, Kevin currently sits on the Executive Management Committee and is also the Executive Board Member responsible for the management of the ATMS Heads of Department. Kevin has been a Board member since 1996.

Maggie Sands
Maggie is qualified in Naturopathy, Remedial Massage and Somatic Psychotherapy and has over 30 years experience in the Natural Medicine Profession. Maggie initially became a Board Member in 1988 and was awarded a Life Membership in 1998. During this time she has held the position of Vice President on 2 separate occasions, 1993-2000 and 2006-2011. Maggie sits on the Executive Management Committee, Public Relations Committee, Academic Review Committee and the Marketing Committee. Her College, the School of Integrated Body Therapy, situated on the Central Coast and Newcastle in New South Wales, was established in 1985.

Matthew Smith
Matthew is qualified in Remedial Massage. He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce from UNSW, and has over 15 years international marketing experience. He is a College Director and lectures in marketing for massage therapists. He sits on the ATMS Marketing Committee and has been a Board member since 2007.

David Stelfox
A qualified Naturopath, David has over 21 years in private practice in addition to many years as a lecturer in natural medicine. David currently Chairs the Academic Review Committee and sits on the Executive Management Committee. David has been a Board member since 1996, and former ATMS Vice-President.

Kevin Watkins
Qualified in Remedial Massage, Aromatherapy and Business Management, Kevin also possesses over 20 year’s clinical experience. Kevin sits on the Complaints Committee and has been a Board member since 2002.


CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER/COMPANY SECRETARY

The Chief Administrative Officer is responsible for the day to day administrative functions of ATMS, and also all duties and responsibilities of the ATMS Company Secretary. This position is a fulltime salaried position.

The Chief Administrative Officer is Matthew Boylan. With a background in public service administration and administrative Law, Matthew is also a qualified Herbalist and Naturopathic Nutritionist and was in private natural medicine practice before taking on his current role. Matthew can be contacted at the ATMS Office on 02 9809 6800.

The Chief Administrative Officer is also responsible for overseeing the management of the ATMS employees. Currently 11 full and part-time staff carry out the many administrative functions required on behalf of ATMS members.


ATMS HONORARY OFFICE HOLDERS

Specialised Departments of Massage Therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Homeopathy, Naturopathic Nutrition, Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine promote the use of these modalities, and address the specific needs of practitioners in these disciplines. State Representatives represent the needs of members and promote ATMS in each State and the ACT. The Member’s Representative serves as a further point of contact for members.

COMMITTEES

Many of the functions and activities of ATMS are managed by Committees. At 1 July 2010 ATMS Committees were:

Executive Management Committee
The Executive Management Committee oversees, and when appropriate, decides more immediate management matters, and also makes recommendations on, or otherwise brings to the attention of the Executive Board, matters requiring that Board’s attention.

Academic Review Committee
The Academic Review Committee assesses and determines individual applications for ATMS membership. The Academic Review Committee also makes recommendations to the Executive Board on College and/or Course recognition, as well as on general academic or other membership/recognition matters.

Professional Education Seminars Committee
The Professional Education Seminars Committee manages all issues concerning the timetabling and running of the ATMS Professional Education Seminars.

Marketing Committee
The Marketing Committee oversees the marketing of ATMS to increase the use of ATMS accredited members by the public, and to increase the membership of ATMS.

Policy Committee
The Policy Committee makes recommendations to the Board on all matters of Policy, including the appropriate regulatory model for the Profession.

Complaints Committee
The Complaints Committee processes all complaints against ATMS members, as well as some other related matters.
